FIRB 2010: Il paesaggio di una grande strada romana

Topographic Survey

A polygonal for the survey has been realized inside and outside the structures of the Sant’Andrea fort, both in the South-East direction towards Itri and in North-West direction towards Fondi, along the old Via Appia. The polygonal is the base of the whole survey and determines the local reference system which the secondary and detailed networks have been connected to. The survey was used to position and to interlink the structures still visible. Moreover the survey of the structures was compared with previous surveys and positioned on the existing cartography. The station points of the polygonal build the network of constraint points and provide uniform accuracy in the survey. The station points are well distributed and well-linked to each other. The vertices (stations) have played a key role in the construction of the network because they allowed to place properly the survey in the local and national cartographic reference system.

The survey was carried out in polar coordinates, and has been processed using a topographical software equipped with several analytical functions including compensation. The topographic survey has been also used to support the geophysics stakes used to mark the "sections" of the terrain investigated from the surface. A land survey campaign was carried out by means of a differential GPS receiver in order to define in detail the trend of land height The main station was positioned in the network point ST01, situated at North on the stronghold.
