FIRB 2010: Il paesaggio di una grande strada romana

Quilici Repositioning Survey

Points on the visible structures have been identified and measured to orient the previous survey (Prof. Quilici). The points have been identified on the old roadway and the ruins of the old fort: the command, the walls of the upper and lower barracks where embrasures and gunnery were located.

A topographical station was located on the roadside of the Via Appia Nuova because the evergreen vegetation hides the walls of the Roman cisterns at the North-East. Moreover, direct measurements have been taken both at the level of walking surface of ancient Appia and at the base of the cisterns along the Fosso di Sant'Andrea.

The direct measurements have completed the topographic survey. The positioning of the Quilici suvey resulted to be incoherent with the topographical surface points; therefore it has been "decomposed" into several parts and then repositioned according the measured topography.
