FIRB 2010: Il paesaggio di una grande strada romana

GIS

Archaeological and geomorphological data coming from field surveys (joined by researchers from both research units) were enclosed into a SIT (Sistema Informativo Territoriale, i.e. Territorial Information System) called AVIA, which is managed within an ArcGIS®(ESRI) environment, suitable for information collection. Even the former archaeological documentation was included, mainly representing the results of the long-time scientific activity from Lorenzo Quilici and Stefania Quilici Gigli on the Appia route in the study area and surrounding territories.

At present, AVIA contain 285 data sheets bearing geoarchaeological features supplied with 245 images, both identified by an unique code and all concerning the Appia route between Fondi and Itri and the territories nearby.

Data can be consulted through a graphic interface which allows to distinguish different types of geoarchaeological items (route, route tracts, villa, area of material exploitation, quarry, springs, etc.) and to have access, according to predetermined research parameters, to each related data sheet containing alpha numerical, graphical and photographical features. In this way consulting and finding information gets largely facilitated. The interconnection between Access-database alpha numerical data and both raster and vector data stored in ArcGis - allowed by a common graphic interface - made possible items geolocalization and its recognition within the territory by means of absolute coordinates.
