Topography and Photogrammetry

The topographic and photogrammetric surveys of the area surrounding St. Andrea fort involved the digital restitution of remaining structures of archaeological interest by means of high-precision instruments (Figs. 1,2). The collected data have been handled with standard topographic methodologies.

The CTR (CTR, i.e. Carta Tecnica Regionale, 1:5.000 scale) has been the cartographic map which the topographic data collected in the study area have been reported on.

The control points needed to position the geophysical surveys carried out over the area were also reported on the CTR.

The combination of the survey of archaeological structures with a GPS (Global Positioning System) based land survey has enabled the production of a detailed DTM (Digital Terrain Model) of the whole area (Fig. 3). GPS data were also used to perform spatial analyses related to the local morphology.

Photogrammetric surveys were completed on a wall of the Bourbon stronghold at which base the remnants of the Apollo Temple are preserved (Fig. 4) and on a retaining wall towards the Fosso di Sant’Andrea along the path of the Appia Antica road. This last survey has been done partly by topographic instruments and partly by the method of direct survey (Fig. 5). All the images have been recorded by a digital camera.
